Chinese reunification

Chinese reunification is the restoration of a unified Chinese state after political division, achieved through conquest, negotiated settlement, or political integration.

Qin unification of China: The Qin state’s conquest of rival kingdoms, completed in 221 BCE, that established China’s first imperial dynasty. It established the enduring model of a unified empire after the Warring States period.
Qin Shi Huang: The first emperor of China, who ruled from 221 to 210 BCE after conquering the rival states. His campaigns and reforms joined conquest to centralized imperial administration.
Imperial examination: A system of examinations used to select officials for the Chinese imperial bureaucracy. A common route into government helped central dynasties staff rule across large territories.
Warring States period: A period of competing Chinese states from the fifth century BCE until Qin conquered its rivals in 221 BCE. It shows the fragmented political order that Qin unification ended.
Han dynasty: An imperial dynasty that ruled China from 206 BCE to 220 CE, consolidating institutions created under the Qin. The Han restored imperial unity after the Qin collapse and made centralized rule durable.
Legalism: A tradition of Chinese political thought emphasizing clear laws, state power, and strict enforcement. Qin rulers used Legalist approaches to strengthen authority over newly conquered territories.
Chinese historiography: The historical writing and interpretation of China’s past, shaped by dynastic records and later scholarship. Dynastic histories often framed reunification as the restoration of legitimate order.
Three Kingdoms: A period from 220 to 280 CE when Wei, Shu, and Wu ruled rival parts of China. Its competing states show that the Han collapse reversed earlier imperial unity.
Sui dynasty: A Chinese dynasty that reunified northern and southern China in 589 after centuries of division. Its brief reunification ended the Northern and Southern dynasties period.
Commandery system: An administrative system that divided territory into centrally governed commanderies and counties. It replaced hereditary regional power with officials answerable to the central state.
