Chulalongkorn

Chulalongkorn, known as Rama V, was king of Siam from 1868 to 1910. He centralized government, pursued modernization, and gradually abolished slavery and corvée labor.

Abolition of slavery in Siam: The gradual dismantling of hereditary bondage in Siam, completed under Chulalongkorn through laws beginning in 1874. His decrees reduced bondage over time without an abrupt economic rupture.
Ministry of the Interior (Thailand): A Thai government ministry responsible for domestic administration and provincial governance. Its creation helped bring provincial administration under the central government.
Mongkut: King of Siam from 1851 to 1868, remembered as Rama IV and as Chulalongkorn’s father. His opening to foreign relations and court reforms prepared conditions inherited by his son.

Queen Saovabha Phongsri: A queen of Siam and regent who served as Chulalongkorn’s principal consort and mother of several future monarchs. She acted as regent during his journeys abroad and held a prominent role at court.
Regency of Si Suriyawong: The regency governing Siam while Chulalongkorn was a minor, led by the powerful noble Si Suriyawong. The regent’s authority shaped the young king’s early years and first period on the throne.
Thesaphiban system: A system of provincial administration that placed Siam’s regions under centrally appointed commissioners and monthon groupings. This system extended the king’s authority into provinces previously governed by local rulers.
Royal pages of Siam: A system of royal service in which boys entered the palace to receive education and administrative training. Palace schooling helped prepare a new cohort of officials for the expanding bureaucracy.
