Congress Poland

Congress Poland was a Polish kingdom established by the Congress of Vienna in 1815 and linked to the Russian Empire. It retained a constitution and institutions that were gradually curtailed under Russian rule.

Congress of Vienna: A diplomatic conference held in 1814–1815 that reorganized Europe after the Napoleonic Wars. Its settlement established the Polish kingdom and defined its relationship with Russia.
Constitution of the Kingdom of Poland (1815): The constitution granted to Congress Poland by Tsar Alexander I in 1815. It established the kingdom’s representative institutions and formal civil protections.
November Uprising: An armed Polish revolt against Russian rule that began in November 1830 and was defeated in 1831. The uprising began in Congress Poland and ended its constitutional order.
Vistula Land: The official name adopted in 1867 for the former Congress Poland under direct Russian administration. The new designation marked the kingdom’s loss of distinct political status.

Russification: Policies intended to expand Russian language, institutions, and cultural influence among non-Russian populations. Russian authorities used these policies to weaken Polish public institutions after the uprisings.
Partitions of Poland: The late-eighteenth-century divisions that erased the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth among Russia, Prussia, and Austria. They provide the territorial history behind Poland’s renewed but limited statehood in 1815.
Grand Duke Constantine Pavlovich: A Russian grand duke who served as commander-in-chief of the Polish army and wielded major influence in Congress Poland. His military authority and clashes with Polish institutions exposed the limits of constitutional autonomy.
