Cyclic compound

A chemical compound whose atoms form one or more closed chains. Its rings may contain only carbon atoms or include other elements.

Chemical bond: An interaction that holds atoms together in molecules and compounds. The bonds linking a sequence of atoms into a closed path define a ring.
Ring strain: The increase in molecular energy caused by constrained bond angles, torsions, or nonbonded interactions in a ring. Small or poorly shaped rings can be less stable because closure forces unfavorable geometry.
Benzene: A six-carbon aromatic molecule with a planar ring and delocalized electrons. Its ring is a foundational structural unit in aromatic compounds and many materials.
Carbocyclic compound: A cyclic compound whose ring atoms are all carbon. It contrasts with heterocycles, whose rings include one or more noncarbon atoms.
August Kekulé: A German chemist who proposed influential structural theories of organic compounds, including a ring model for benzene. His benzene model helped establish the idea that atoms could form closed chains.
Molecular graph: A representation of a molecule as a graph whose vertices are atoms and edges are bonds. A ring is a closed path in the molecule’s graph.
Conformational analysis: The study of molecular shapes produced by rotation around single bonds. Flexible rings adopt distinct shapes that affect their energy and reactivity.
Pyridine: An aromatic six-membered ring containing five carbon atoms and one nitrogen atom. Its nitrogen-containing ring appears in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and coordination chemistry.
Fused ring system: A ring system in which two rings share a bond and its two atoms. Fused rings differ topologically from rings joined by a single bond or bridge.
Benzene structure: The arrangement and bonding of atoms in benzene, represented by six carbon atoms in a ring. Debates over benzene’s bonding shaped how chemists understood cyclic and aromatic structures.
