David Sarnoff

David Sarnoff (1891–1971) was an American business executive who led the Radio Corporation of America and helped develop radio and television broadcasting into mass media.

Edwin Howard Armstrong: An American electrical engineer who developed regenerative, superheterodyne, and wideband FM radio circuits. Armstrong’s inventions advanced radio, while his patent battles with RCA became a bitter conflict with Sarnoff.
Radio Corporation of America: An American electronics and communications company founded in 1919 that became a major radio and television manufacturer and broadcaster. Sarnoff rose through RCA and served as its president and chairman.
Wireless telegraphy: Communication by sending telegraph signals through electromagnetic waves rather than wires. Sarnoff entered the communications industry as a wireless telegraph operator.
Television broadcasting: The transmission of moving images and sound from stations to television receivers. Sarnoff championed RCA’s television development and its public launch.
Owen D. Young: An American lawyer and corporate executive who chaired RCA and helped organize its early structure. Young recruited Sarnoff to lead RCA in 1930.
National Broadcasting Company: An American radio and television network founded in 1926 by the Radio Corporation of America. Sarnoff helped create NBC to give RCA a national platform for broadcasting.
Marconi Company: A wireless telegraphy company founded by Guglielmo Marconi that operated in Britain and the United States. Sarnoff worked for the American Marconi company before RCA absorbed its assets.
Radio network: A system of stations that distributes the same programs from a central source to multiple locations. Sarnoff’s NBC helped establish the national network as a standard broadcasting structure.
William S. Paley: An American broadcasting executive who built the Columbia Broadcasting System into a major radio and television network. Paley built CBS into RCA’s principal broadcasting rival.
RCA–GE patent agreement: A 1920 agreement that pooled radio patents held by RCA, General Electric, and related companies. The agreement helped RCA consolidate control over radio technology and licensing.
