Diplomacy

Diplomacy is the conduct of relations between political entities through negotiation, representation, and communication. It can manage disputes, coordinate policy, and secure agreements without force.

Negotiation: A process in which parties communicate to reach an agreement or manage disagreement. Diplomats use negotiation to reconcile competing interests and shape agreements.
Ancient Greek diplomacy: The practices by which Greek city-states sent envoys, negotiated agreements, and managed relations. Greek city-states show how diplomacy operated before the modern state system.
Preventive diplomacy: Diplomatic action intended to prevent disputes from escalating into conflict or to limit their spread. It applies negotiation and communication before a crisis becomes harder to contain.
Coercive diplomacy: A strategy that uses threats or limited force to persuade an adversary to change its behavior. It combines communication with coercion, unlike diplomacy based solely on negotiation and representation.
Treaty of Versailles: The 1919 peace treaty between Germany and the Allied and Associated Powers after World War I. Its terms illustrate how negotiated settlements can create lasting grievances and political consequences.
Diplomatic mission: An official office and staff representing one political entity in another state or at an international organization. Missions provide the permanent presence through which much diplomacy is conducted.
Renaissance diplomacy: The diplomatic practices that developed among Italian states during the Renaissance, including resident ambassadors. Permanent embassies emerged as rulers sought continuous information and representation.
Summit diplomacy: Direct diplomatic engagement between heads of state or government. Leaders can settle priorities or break impasses that lower-level talks cannot resolve.
Economic sanctions: Restrictions on trade, finance, or other economic activity imposed to influence a government or organization. Sanctions exert pressure that can accompany diplomatic efforts or obstruct them.
Camp David Accords: The 1978 agreements that established a framework for peace between Egypt and Israel. They show how sustained mediation and negotiation can transform relations between former adversaries.
