Dutch Formosa

Dutch Formosa was the Dutch East India Company’s colonial possession on Taiwan from 1624 to 1662, centered on Fort Zeelandia. It ended when Zheng Chenggong’s forces compelled the Dutch surrender.

Dutch East India Company: A chartered Dutch trading company that operated overseas trade, diplomacy, and military campaigns from 1602 to 1799. The company governed the colony, controlled its trade, and defended its Taiwan strongholds.
Dutch East India Company in Asia: The Dutch East India Company’s network of trading posts, territories, and shipping routes across Asia. Formosa was one possession within this wider commercial and military network.

Fort Zeelandia: A Dutch fortress on Taiwan’s southwestern coast that served as the administrative and military center of Dutch Formosa. This fort became the Dutch colony’s final stronghold during the 1661–1662 siege.
Dutch Taiwan expedition of 1624: The Dutch East India Company’s 1624 establishment of a base on Taiwan after abandoning its attempt to occupy the Pescadores. This expedition marks the beginning of Dutch rule on Taiwan.
