Fuel injection

Fuel injection meters and delivers fuel into an engine’s intake air or combustion chamber. It replaced carburetors in most modern internal-combustion engines by controlling fuel delivery more precisely.

Fuel injector: A valve or nozzle that meters and sprays fuel into an engine’s intake or combustion chamber. It is the component that physically releases metered fuel.
Internal combustion engine: An engine that produces power by burning fuel inside a working chamber. Fuel injection is one method of supplying fuel to this broader engine type.
Carburetor: A device that mixes fuel with intake air using pressure differences rather than electronically controlled injectors. It is the traditional alternative that fuel injection largely displaced in cars.
Diesel fuel injection: The metered delivery of diesel fuel into compressed air in a diesel engine. Diesel engines depend on precisely timed injection to control ignition and combustion.
Catalytic converter: An exhaust device that converts harmful pollutants into less harmful gases through chemical reactions. Accurate fuel metering helps maintain exhaust conditions needed for effective catalyst operation.
Fuel pump: A pump that moves fuel from a tank through an engine’s fuel system. It supplies the pressure needed to deliver fuel through injectors.
Four-stroke engine: An engine cycle consisting of intake, compression, power, and exhaust strokes. Its repeating strokes define when injected fuel can mix and burn.
Port fuel injection: A system that sprays fuel into an intake port near each cylinder’s intake valve. It contrasts with direct injection by mixing fuel with air before the cylinder.
Common rail: A diesel injection system that stores high-pressure fuel in a shared rail. It enables precise pressure control and multiple injections during one engine cycle.
Fuel economy: The distance a vehicle travels per unit of fuel consumed. Precise delivery can reduce wasted fuel across changing engine conditions.
