Gallic Wars

The Gallic Wars were Julius Caesar’s campaigns from 58 to 50 BCE that brought much of Gaul under Roman control and expanded his political power.

Alesia: A fortified oppidum in Gaul where Caesar besieged Vercingetorix’s forces in 52 BCE. The siege and relief battle broke the most organized Gallic revolt.
Julius Caesar: A Roman general and politician who conquered Gaul and later became dictator of the Roman Republic. His command in Gaul built the military reputation and resources he used in Roman politics.
Helvetii migration: The migration of the Helvetii from their homeland through Gaul in 58 BCE. Caesar presented stopping it as the immediate reason for his first campaign.
Gallic Wars casualties: The deaths, enslavements, and displacement caused by Caesar’s campaigns in Gaul. Ancient accounts describe severe losses, though their totals remain disputed.
Roman conquest of Britain: The Roman invasion and gradual occupation of Britain beginning under Emperor Claudius in 43 CE. Unlike Caesar’s brief expeditions, this conquest established a lasting provincial occupation.

Helvetii: A Celtic people of the Swiss Plateau who attempted a large-scale migration in 58 BCE. Their movement brought Caesar into armed intervention in Gaul.
Romanization of Gaul: The gradual adoption and adaptation of Roman language, institutions, and customs in Gaul. Conquest began a long process of political and cultural transformation.
Roman conquest of Hispania: Rome’s prolonged conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, which began during the Second Punic War. Its much longer duration contrasts with Caesar’s concentrated campaigns in Gaul.
