Ghurid dynasty

The Ghurid dynasty was a medieval Muslim ruling house based in Ghor that expanded across parts of present-day Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, and northern India in the 12th and early 13th centuries.

Ghor: A mountainous region in present-day central Afghanistan that was the Ghurid dynasty’s homeland. Its difficult terrain sheltered the ruling house before its expansion.
Mu'izz al-Din Muhammad: A Ghurid ruler who led campaigns into northern India and helped establish lasting Muslim rule there. His conquests carried Ghurid authority eastward beyond the Afghan heartland.
Prithviraj Chauhan: A Rajput ruler of Ajmer and Delhi who fought Mu'izz al-Din Muhammad at Tarain. His defeat illustrates the Ghurids’ military challenge to established North Indian kingdoms.

Qutb al-Din Aibak: A former Ghurid military slave who became ruler of the Ghurid Indian territories after Mu'izz al-Din’s death. He turned delegated Ghurid command into an independent sultanate.
Qutb Minar: A monumental minaret in Delhi begun under Qutb al-Din Aibak and completed by later rulers. Its construction marks the political and architectural legacy of Ghurid successors.
Ala al-Din Husayn: A Ghurid ruler who sacked Ghazni in 1151 and became known as Jahansuz, or World Burner. His destruction of Ghazni marked the dynasty’s violent break with Ghaznavid power.
Firozkoh: The Ghurid capital in the mountains of Ghor, now identified with archaeological remains in central Afghanistan. The capital anchored the dynasty’s western and central territories.
