Gillnetting

Gillnetting is a fishing method that uses a wall of netting to catch fish when they become entangled, often by their gills.

Gillnet: A fishing net with mesh sized to entangle fish, commonly around the body or behind the gill covers. Its mesh and hanging dimensions create the entangling barrier used in gillnetting.
Drift net: A gillnet that drifts with currents, often near the surface and attached to a vessel. Drifting is one way gillnets are deployed to intercept moving fish.
Trawling: A fishing method that tows a net through water or along the seabed to capture organisms. Trawls actively sweep an area, unlike gillnets that entangle fish contacting a set or drifting net.
Cetacean bycatch: The unintended capture of whales, dolphins, or porpoises in fishing gear. Cetaceans can become entangled in gillnets and drown before retrieval.
Mesh size: The dimension of an opening in a net, measured between knots or along the mesh. Mesh size influences which fish can become caught and which pass through.
Set net: A stationary fishing net anchored or otherwise fixed in position in the water. Fixed gillnets catch fish moving through a chosen area rather than following a vessel.
Longline fishing: A fishing method using a main line equipped with many baited hooks. Longlines catch fish on hooks rather than by entanglement in net mesh.
Seabird bycatch: The unintended capture of seabirds in fishing gear. Diving seabirds may become entangled when they forage around submerged gillnets.
Bycatch: Animals caught unintentionally during fishing operations. Gillnets can entangle species and sizes beyond those the fishing gear targets.
Salmon fishery: A fishery that harvests salmon for food, commerce, or subsistence. Gillnets are used in some salmon fisheries to intercept migrating fish.
