Grand Duchy of Finland

The Grand Duchy of Finland was an autonomous polity within the Russian Empire from 1809 until Finland declared independence in 1917.

Finnish War: A war between Sweden and Russia from 1808 to 1809 that transferred Finland to Russian rule. Russia’s victory created the conditions for Finland’s separation from Sweden.
Governor-General of Finland: The Russian emperor’s chief representative in Finland, overseeing the administration and military affairs of the grand duchy. The governor-general connected Finland’s administration to imperial authority.
Nicholas I of Russia: Emperor of Russia from 1825 to 1855, whose reign in Finland was marked by a long interval without Diet sessions. His government maintained Finland’s institutions while limiting representative politics.
