Hong Taiji

Hong Taiji (1592–1643) was the Manchu ruler who transformed the Later Jin state into the Qing dynasty’s imperial state and ruled from 1626 to 1643.

Eight Banners: A military and social organization that grouped Manchu, Mongol, and later Han Chinese households under banner commanders. The banner system organized Hong Taiji’s armies and the households supporting his state.
Nurhaci: The Jurchen leader who founded the Later Jin state and initiated the political unification of Manchu groups. Hong Taiji inherited the state and military structures his father had built.
Dorgon: A Qing prince and military leader who helped conquer China and served as regent for the Shunzhi emperor. Hong Taiji’s half-brother became central to the succession and conquest after his death.
Qing dynasty: China’s last imperial dynasty, founded by the Manchus and ruled from 1644 to 1912. Hong Taiji adopted the Qing name and laid foundations for the dynasty’s imperial rule.
Manchu alphabet: A writing system created in 1599 by adapting the Mongolian script to write the Manchu language. A standardized written language helped administer the expanding state he ruled.
Jurchen people: A Tungusic-speaking people of northeastern Asia whose descendants include the Manchu. The Jurchen political and cultural legacy preceded Hong Taiji’s Manchu state.
Abahai: A consort of Hong Taiji and mother of the future Shunzhi emperor, whose death preceded a contested succession. Her son’s claim helped make succession negotiations decisive in 1643.
Qing conquest of the Ming: The military and political process by which the Qing replaced the Ming as rulers of China during the seventeenth century. His preparations and campaigns made the subsequent conquest possible.
Manchu people: An East Asian people whose homeland lay in northeastern China and who founded the Qing dynasty. Hong Taiji consolidated Manchu power while broadening the state’s political base.
Aisin Gioro: The Manchu ruling clan that founded the Later Jin and Qing dynasties. Hong Taiji’s authority came from his position within the ruling clan.
