Imperial Japanese Army

Japan’s land forces from the Meiji era through the end of World War II, established during the country’s modernization and dissolved after its defeat in 1945.

Japanese Conscription: The system that required eligible Japanese men to serve in the armed forces. Conscription supplied the army’s mass manpower after its introduction in 1873.
Meiji Restoration: The political transformation beginning in 1868 that restored imperial rule and modernized Japan. The new government created a centralized army as part of its state-building program.
Hideki Tojo: A Japanese general and politician who served as prime minister from 1941 to 1944. His army career and premiership linked military leadership to wartime government.

Tomoyuki Yamashita: A Japanese general known for leading the conquest of Malaya and Singapore in 1941–1942. His victories made him one of the army’s most prominent field commanders.
