Indian Army

The Indian Army was the land force of British India, composed largely of Indian soldiers and commanded by British officers. It served across South Asia and in overseas campaigns.

British Indian Army recruitment: The systems through which British India recruited soldiers for its army. Recruitment policies determined who served and helped sustain the army's regional and social composition.
East India Company Army: The military forces maintained by the English East India Company in South Asia. These company forces formed the institutional foundations of the later imperial army.
World War I in the Middle East: The campaigns fought in the Middle East during the First World War. Indian Army formations fought in Mesopotamia, Palestine, and other Middle Eastern theaters.
Indian National Army: A force formed during the Second World War to fight British rule with Japanese support. Its Indian recruits and defections challenged the loyalty expected of imperial soldiers.
Indian Army regiments: Military units organized around shared identities, traditions, or specialized roles in the Indian Army. Regiments were the army's main units for organizing soldiers and preserving distinct service traditions.
Indian Rebellion of 1857: A widespread uprising against East India Company rule in northern and central India. The uprising prompted the Crown to reorganize military control and recruitment in India.
Mesopotamian campaign: The First World War campaign in Ottoman Mesopotamia, including the siege of Kut and the capture of Baghdad. Indian forces made up much of the British-led army in this costly theater.
Royal Indian Navy mutiny: A 1946 uprising by Indian naval ratings against British authority and service conditions. The mutiny heightened concerns about the reliability of India's armed forces before independence.
Indian Army officer corps: The commissioned officers who commanded the Indian Army, predominantly British before independence. British officers held command authority over a force whose rank and file were largely Indian.
Government of India Act 1858: The act that transferred governance of India from the East India Company to the British Crown. Crown rule placed the army within a new imperial administration after 1857.
