Janissary

A member of the Ottoman Empire’s elite infantry corps, recruited primarily through the devşirme system and maintained as a standing force. Janissaries became influential in Ottoman politics as well as warfare.

Devşirme: An Ottoman levy that selected Christian boys from the empire’s provinces for conversion, education, and state service. It supplied many Janissaries and tied their careers to the sultan’s household.
Murad I: An Ottoman sultan who ruled from 1362 to 1389 during the early expansion of the empire. His reign is traditionally associated with the formation of the Janissary corps.
Osman II: An Ottoman sultan who ruled from 1618 to 1622 and was killed after a Janissary revolt. His overthrow exposed the corps’ ability to challenge a reigning sultan.
Siege of Constantinople (1453): The Ottoman siege that captured Constantinople in 1453 and ended the Byzantine Empire. Janissaries participated in the campaign that secured the new imperial capital.
Sipahi: A mounted Ottoman cavalryman who commonly held land revenues in return for military service. Sipahis were provincial cavalry, unlike the sultan’s centrally maintained infantry.
Acemi oğlanı: A novice in the Ottoman palace training system, often preparing for service in the Janissary corps. New recruits passed through this training stage before becoming full Janissaries.
Ottoman Interregnum: The succession crisis and civil war among Ottoman princes from 1402 to 1413. The corps’ early role in centralizing military power took shape amid dynastic conflict.
Mahmud II: An Ottoman sultan who ruled from 1808 to 1839 and dismantled the Janissary corps in 1826. His campaign against the corps reshaped the empire’s military institutions.
Battle of Mohács: A 1526 battle in which Ottoman forces defeated the Kingdom of Hungary. The victory demonstrates the corps’ role in Ottoman military expansion.
Mamluk: A military slave or former military slave who served in Islamic states, especially Egypt and Syria. Both institutions recruited outsiders, but their organization and political histories differed.
