Joseph II

Joseph II was Holy Roman emperor from 1765 to 1790 and ruler of the Habsburg lands. His reforms sought to centralize government and extend religious toleration, often provoking resistance.

Josephinism: A program of state-directed reform that subordinated church institutions to Habsburg authority. It names the governing approach behind Joseph's efforts to regulate the Catholic Church.
