Klemens von Metternich

Klemens von Metternich (1773–1859) was an Austrian diplomat and statesman who served as foreign minister and chancellor. He helped shape the post-Napoleonic European order and opposed liberal and nationalist movements.

Francis I of Austria: Emperor of Austria from 1804 to 1835 and king of Hungary and Bohemia. Metternich served Francis I as foreign minister and chief political adviser.
Congress of Vienna: The 1814–1815 diplomatic conference that redrew Europe after Napoleon’s defeat. Metternich hosted and helped steer the negotiations that established the postwar order.
