Leiden University

Leiden University is a public research university in the Netherlands, founded in 1575. It is the country’s oldest university.

Siege of Leiden: A Spanish siege of Leiden during the Dutch Revolt, lifted in October 1574. The city’s resistance preceded William of Orange’s decision to establish a university there.
Joseph Justus Scaliger: A French scholar of classical languages and chronology who taught at Leiden from 1593. His appointment strengthened the university’s reputation in Renaissance scholarship.

Leiden University Library: The main academic library of Leiden University, holding extensive research collections and special collections. Its collections preserve and support scholarship across the university’s disciplines.
Clinical teaching: Medical education in which students learn through supervised work with patients. Boerhaave’s bedside teaching at Leiden became influential in European medical education.
Pilgrim Fathers: English Separatists who settled in Leiden before departing for North America in 1620. Their years in Leiden connected the university city to the history of early English America.
