Liao dynasty

The Liao dynasty was a Khitan-led empire that ruled parts of northern China and Inner Asia from 907 to 1125, combining steppe traditions with Chinese institutions.

Northern and Southern Chancellery: The Liao government’s paired administrative systems, which governed populations according to distinct steppe and sedentary institutions. This division let the dynasty apply different laws and offices to Khitan and Chinese communities.
Khitan people: A Mongolic-speaking people who established states across parts of Manchuria, Mongolia, and northern China. The Liao dynasty grew from Khitan political and military organization.
Battle of Shanyuanguan: A 1004–1005 military confrontation between the Liao and Song dynasties that ended in a negotiated settlement. The battle demonstrated the Liao’s leverage over the Song court.
Western Liao: A Khitan-led state founded in Central Asia in the twelfth century by survivors of the Liao dynasty. It carried Khitan rule westward after the original dynasty was conquered.

Abaoji: The Khitan leader who founded the Liao dynasty and ruled as Emperor Taizu from 907 to 926. Abaoji unified Khitan power and established the ruling dynasty.
Treaty of Chanyuan: The 1005 agreement that ended a major Liao–Song conflict and established formal relations and annual payments. Its terms secured a long period of relative peace between the rival empires.
Jin dynasty (1115–1234): A Jurchen-led dynasty that overthrew the Liao and ruled northern China from 1115 to 1234. The Jin replaced Liao power and inherited much of its northern territory.
Liao dynasty Buddhist art: Buddhist sculpture, painting, architecture, and ritual objects produced under Liao rule. Liao patronage adapted Buddhist forms to Khitan court culture.
