Line of battle

A naval formation in which warships sail in succession, bringing their side-mounted guns to bear while limiting exposure to enemy fire.

Line-ahead formation: A formation in which ships follow one another along the same course. The line of battle commonly arranged ships in this specific single-file order.
Battle of the Gabbard: A 1653 naval battle between the English Commonwealth and the Dutch Republic during the First Anglo-Dutch War. English ships used line-ahead tactics in an early battle associated with the formation’s development.
