Liu Song dynasty

The Liu Song dynasty ruled southern China from 420 to 479, as the first of the Southern Dynasties in the Six Dynasties period.

Eastern Jin dynasty: A Chinese dynasty that ruled south of the Yangtze River from 317 to 420. Its final decades created the court and political crisis from which Liu Song emerged.
Emperor Wen of Liu Song: The third Liu Song emperor, whose long reign from 424 to 453 brought relative prosperity and expansion. His reign is the dynasty’s clearest period of consolidation and strong central rule.
Southern Qi: A Southern Dynasties regime that ruled from Jiankang between 479 and 502. It succeeded Liu Song after Xiao Daocheng compelled the last emperor to abdicate.
Yangtze River: The longest river in Asia, flowing east across China to the East China Sea. Its basin anchored Liu Song’s territory and connected the capital to southern regions.
Liu Yu: A general who founded the Liu Song dynasty and reigned as Emperor Wu from 420 to 422. His military victories and abdication of the Jin throne established the dynasty.
Emperor Xiaowu of Liu Song: A Liu Song emperor who ruled from 453 to 464 after defeating a rival brother in a succession war. His rule shows how dynastic succession could turn into armed conflict.
Northern Wei: A northern Chinese dynasty founded by the Tuoba clan that ruled from 386 to 534. Its rivalry with Liu Song defined the major north–south divide of the period.
Mandate of Heaven: A Chinese political doctrine that treats legitimate rule as conditional on Heaven’s approval. Dynastic replacement was framed as a transfer of legitimate authority, not merely a coup.
Emperor An of Jin: The last emperor of Eastern Jin, deposed by Liu Yu in 420. His deposition formally ended the dynasty Liu Yu replaced.
Liu Shao: A Liu Song prince who seized the throne after murdering his father, Emperor Wen, in 453. His brief coup exposed the vulnerability of imperial succession.
