May Fourth Movement

A Chinese student-led protest movement that began in Beijing on May 4, 1919, opposing the Treaty of Versailles decision on Shandong and spurring political and cultural change.

Treaty of Versailles: The 1919 peace treaty that formally ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied powers after World War I. Its transfer of German rights in Shandong to Japan triggered the Beijing protests.
Beijing University: A public research university founded in Beijing in 1898, known for its influential role in modern Chinese intellectual life. Its students and faculty helped organize and shape the May 4 demonstrations.
