Merovingian dynasty

The Merovingian dynasty was a Frankish royal house that ruled much of Gaul and neighboring territories from the fifth to the eighth century. Its kings presided over the rise of the Franks as a major western European power.

Franks: A group of Germanic peoples who established kingdoms in parts of the former Roman Empire. The dynasty emerged among Frankish communities along the Roman frontier.
Frankish succession: The inheritance practices by which Frankish rulers divided authority and territories among heirs. Dividing kingdoms among sons repeatedly reshaped Merovingian political unity.
Chlothar I: A Merovingian king who reunited much of the Frankish realm in 558 after inheriting and conquering rival territories. His reign briefly restored unity after the kingdoms had been divided.
Battle of Tertry: A 687 battle in which the Austrasian mayor of the palace, Pippin of Herstal, defeated Neustria’s forces. The victory established Austrasian dominance over the Frankish kingdoms.
Visigothic Kingdom: A kingdom established by the Visigoths in parts of southwestern Gaul and the Iberian Peninsula. Its rulers competed with Merovingian kings for territory and influence in Gaul.
Childeric I: A fifth-century Frankish king whose grave at Tournai contained both Roman and Frankish regalia. His burial and rule provide early evidence for the family’s authority.
Mayor of the palace: A senior official in Frankish kingdoms who managed the royal household and exercised growing political authority. These officials governed in the kings’ names and eventually displaced their rule.
Dagobert I: A Merovingian king who ruled Austrasia and later the reunited Frankish kingdom in the seventh century. He is often treated as one of the last kings to exercise substantial personal authority.
Childeric III: The last Merovingian king, deposed by the Frankish aristocracy in 751. His removal formally ended the dynasty’s kingship.
Ostrogothic Kingdom: A kingdom in Italy ruled by the Ostrogoths from the late fifth to the sixth century. It offers a contemporary comparison between Germanic kingship and Roman institutions.
