Mössbauer spectroscopy

Mössbauer spectroscopy measures nuclear energy transitions through recoilless resonant emission and absorption of gamma rays. It can resolve small energy shifts that reveal an atom’s chemical and magnetic environment.

Nuclear resonance: The absorption or emission of radiation at energies matching transitions between nuclear states. Mössbauer spectroscopy detects resonance between nuclear states in source and absorber.
Gamma ray: A high-energy photon emitted in nuclear transitions or other energetic processes. The method uses gamma rays matched to nuclear transition energies.
Iron-57: A stable iron isotope whose excited nuclear state enables widely used Mössbauer measurements. Its accessible transitions make it the most common Mössbauer probe.
Rudolf Mössbauer: German physicist who discovered recoilless nuclear resonance absorption in 1958. His discovery supplied the physical effect on which the spectroscopy is based.
X-ray absorption spectroscopy: A method that measures how a material absorbs X-rays as their energy varies near atomic absorption edges. It probes electronic and local structural environments, while Mössbauer spectroscopy selects nuclear transitions.
Doppler effect: The change in observed frequency or energy caused by relative motion between a source and observer. Moving the source shifts gamma-ray energy to scan across a nuclear resonance.
Nuclear energy level: A quantized energy state of an atomic nucleus. Resonant absorption probes the energy differences between these states.
Oxidation state: A formal measure of an atom’s electron loss or gain in a compound. Isomer shifts and quadrupole patterns help distinguish iron oxidation states.
Mössbauer effect: The recoil-free emission and absorption of gamma rays by nuclei bound in a solid. The discovery of this effect established the method’s experimental foundation.
Nuclear magnetic resonance: A spectroscopic method that probes nuclear spins in a magnetic field using radiofrequency radiation. Both methods reveal local nuclear environments, but use different transitions and energy scales.
