Norodom Sihanouk

Norodom Sihanouk was a Cambodian monarch and political leader who held the country’s highest office in several forms from 1941 to 2004. He led Cambodia through independence, the Vietnam War era, civil conflict, and changing political systems.

Cambodia under French rule: Cambodia was a French protectorate from 1863 until independence in 1953. Sihanouk inherited a kingdom whose foreign affairs and administration had long been constrained by France.

Khmer Republic: The Khmer Republic was Cambodia’s pro-American government from 1970 until the Khmer Rouge victory in 1975. It replaced Sihanouk’s leadership and fought the royalist-communist coalition formed in his name.
Pol Pot: Pol Pot was the Cambodian communist leader who headed the Khmer Rouge and Democratic Kampuchea. Sihanouk’s alliance with Pol Pot’s movement contrasted sharply with his later imprisonment under its rule.
Cambodian genocide: The Cambodian genocide was the mass killing and persecution carried out under Khmer Rouge rule from 1975 to 1979. Sihanouk’s association with the Khmer Rouge remains inseparable from the catastrophe that followed its victory.
