Optical telegraph

An optical telegraph relays messages between distant stations using visible signals, often by moving mechanical arms or shutters. Operators encode text as signal patterns and repeat them from station to station.

Chappe telegraph: A French optical telegraph system that used pivoting arms atop towers to display coded signals. Its semaphore arms show how a mechanical signal could encode messages across a relay line.
Claude Chappe: A French inventor who developed a practical optical telegraph system in the late eighteenth century. Chappe and his brothers devised the semaphore system that France adopted for long-distance communication.
Military communications: The systems and practices used to convey information among armed forces. Optical lines carried urgent military information, including reports from frontier regions.
