Ottoman Caliphate

The Ottoman dynasty’s claim to leadership of the Sunni Muslim community, especially prominent from the sixteenth century onward. Ottoman sultans combined this religious title with imperial rule until the caliphate was abolished in 1924.

Selim I: An Ottoman sultan who conquered Mamluk lands in 1516–1517, bringing Egypt and the holy cities under Ottoman rule. His conquests made Ottoman claims to Muslim leadership more consequential.
Ottoman sultan: The hereditary ruler of the Ottoman Empire, combining supreme political authority with military and administrative leadership. The caliphate was held by the sultan, joining religious claims to dynastic rule.
Sharifian Caliphate: A short-lived caliphal claim made by Hussein bin Ali, Sharif of Mecca, after the Ottoman caliphate’s abolition. Hussein’s claim challenged the idea that caliphal leadership had passed exclusively to the Ottoman dynasty.
Abdülhamid II: Ottoman sultan from 1876 to 1909 who emphasized pan-Islamic solidarity and his caliphal authority. He made the caliphate a prominent instrument of diplomacy and imperial cohesion.
Mamluk Sultanate: A Muslim state centered in Egypt and Syria that ruled the holy cities of Mecca and Medina before Ottoman conquest. Its defeat transferred control of the holy cities to the Ottoman dynasty.
Şeyhülislam: The Ottoman Empire’s highest-ranking jurisconsult, who issued legal opinions and oversaw the religious-legal establishment. This office supplied authoritative legal counsel without making the caliph the sole interpreter of Islamic law.
Sokoto Caliphate: A West African Muslim state founded by Usman dan Fodio’s jihad in the early nineteenth century. Its independent caliphal title shows that Ottoman claims did not exhaust Muslim political uses of the term.
Pan-Islamism: A political movement advocating solidarity among Muslims across national and imperial boundaries. Ottoman rulers invoked shared Muslim allegiance to bolster imperial influence and unity.
Mecca: A city in western Arabia containing the Kaaba, Islam’s holiest sanctuary and the destination of the annual hajj. Ottoman protection of Islam’s holiest city strengthened the dynasty’s religious standing.
Hajj: The annual pilgrimage to Mecca that Muslims who are able must perform at least once in their lives. Organizing routes and securing pilgrims gave Ottoman claims to guardianship a practical dimension.
