Ottoman succession

Ottoman succession was the transfer of sovereignty among members of the Ottoman dynasty. It relied on dynastic claims and political power rather than a fixed rule of primogeniture.

Ottoman fratricide: The execution of rival Ottoman princes to prevent dynastic conflict and consolidate a new sultan’s rule. Mehmed II’s law made killing brothers an accepted means of securing accession.
Osman I: The founder of the Ottoman dynasty, who established a principality in northwestern Anatolia around the turn of the fourteenth century. His descendants’ rule became the dynastic basis for every Ottoman accession.
Bayezid I: An Ottoman sultan who ruled from 1389 to 1402 and was captured after defeat by Timur at Ankara. His capture left his sons to fight for control of the dynasty and empire.

Law of the Eldest and Wisest: A principle under which the dynasty’s oldest and most capable male member was favored for succession. It replaced competition among princes with seniority, though it was not applied as an absolute rule.
Orhan: The second Ottoman ruler, who expanded the principality and consolidated its institutions in the fourteenth century. His succession after Osman illustrates early dynastic transfer before formal succession laws existed.
Mehmed I: The Ottoman sultan who reunited the empire after winning the civil war among Bayezid I’s sons. His victory restored a single sovereign after nearly a decade of competing claims.
Ottoman civil war: An armed conflict within the Ottoman state between rival factions or claimants to power. Contested accessions could turn rival princely claims into wars that fractured imperial authority.
Kafes: The guarded confinement of Ottoman princes within the palace, especially in the later Ottoman period. Keeping princes in the palace reduced rebellions but left some sultans without experience of government.
Mehmed II: The Ottoman sultan who conquered Constantinople in 1453 and issued a law addressing dynastic succession and fratricide. His law articulated a forceful answer to the risks of rival princes.
