Paulo Freire

Paulo Freire was a Brazilian educator and philosopher whose work developed critical pedagogy and conscientização, the process of becoming critically aware of social and political conditions.

Critical pedagogy: An approach to education that examines how teaching and learning reproduce or challenge social power. Freire’s work became a foundational framework for this approach.
Brazilian literacy campaigns: Organized efforts to teach reading and writing to Brazil’s large population of nonliterate adults. Freire developed his adult-literacy approach through work in this setting.
Elza Freire: A Brazilian educator who collaborated with Paulo Freire on literacy education and supported his intellectual work. Her educational practice and partnership shaped the development of his literacy methods.
Adult literacy: The teaching and learning of reading and writing by people beyond the usual age of compulsory schooling. Freire’s early teaching focused on adult learners and literacy as political participation.
Pedagogy of the Oppressed: Freire’s 1968 book arguing that education can either reinforce oppression or support collective liberation. It presents his best-known account of dialogue, banking education, and praxis.
