Peripheral vision

Peripheral vision is visual perception outside the center of gaze. It generally provides less fine detail than central vision while remaining sensitive to broad patterns and movement.

Visual field: The region of space visible while the eyes are directed at a fixed point. Peripheral vision covers the visual field beyond its central region.
Visual acuity: The ability to resolve fine spatial detail, commonly measured with letter charts. Peripheral acuity declines with distance from the point of gaze.
Visual search: The process of locating a target among competing visual items. Peripheral cues help guide gaze toward likely targets during visual search.
Central vision: Vision focused on the center of gaze, where fine detail and color discrimination are strongest. It supplies the detailed information that peripheral vision sacrifices for broader coverage.
Fovea: A small retinal region with densely packed cones that supports the sharpest central vision. Its high acuity contrasts with the lower detail available in peripheral vision.
Contrast sensitivity: The ability to distinguish differences in brightness across patterns at different scales. Peripheral sensitivity varies with both contrast and the size of a visual pattern.
Driving: Operating and controlling a vehicle on a road or other route. Drivers use peripheral vision to monitor nearby traffic while looking ahead.
Visual attention: The selection of some information for prioritized processing over other available information. Attention can shift toward peripheral signals without moving the eyes.
Retina: The light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye that converts light into neural signals. Its changing cell distribution across the eye shapes peripheral sensitivity.
Motion perception: The perception of movement from changes in an object's position over time. Peripheral vision often detects motion before it identifies an object's details.
