Punic Wars

The Punic Wars were three wars fought between Rome and Carthage from 264 to 146 BCE. They ended with Carthage destroyed and Rome dominant in the western Mediterranean.

First Punic War: The 264–241 BCE war between Rome and Carthage, fought largely over Sicily and at sea. It began the conflict and ended with Rome taking Sicily, Carthage’s first major overseas possession.
Hannibal: A Carthaginian general who led an invasion of Italy during the Second Punic War. His victories made him Rome’s most formidable opponent in the wars.
Roman navy: The naval forces maintained by the Roman Republic to protect its interests and wage war at sea. Rome built a major fleet during the First Punic War to contest Carthaginian sea power.
Roman Republic: The system of government in Rome from the overthrow of its kings until the establishment of the Roman Empire. The wars expanded the Republic’s territory, resources, and influence.
Pyrrhic War: A 280–275 BCE conflict in which Rome fought Pyrrhus of Epirus in southern Italy and Sicily. It was an earlier Roman conflict with a Hellenistic king, unlike the sustained rivalry with Carthage.
Second Punic War: The 218–201 BCE war in which Hannibal invaded Italy and Rome ultimately defeated Carthage. Hannibal’s invasion brought Rome close to defeat before Roman victory shifted power decisively.
Scipio Africanus: A Roman general who defeated Hannibal at Zama and helped end the Second Punic War. His campaigns brought the war to Carthage and secured Rome’s victory.
Carthaginian navy: The fleet of Carthage, a major maritime power in the western Mediterranean. Its strength made control of the sea a central challenge for Rome.
Carthage: An ancient Phoenician-founded city-state in North Africa that became a major Mediterranean power. Its rivalry with Rome defined the wars, and its destruction ended its independence.
Macedonian Wars: A series of conflicts between Rome and the Antigonid kingdom of Macedon from 214 to 148 BCE. They show Rome’s simultaneous expansion against eastern powers during the era of the Punic Wars.
