Safavid dynasty

The Safavid dynasty ruled Persia from 1501 to 1736 and established Twelver Shiism as the state religion, shaping Iran’s political and religious identity.

Safaviyya: A Sufi order founded in Ardabil that became the religious and political base of the Safavid dynasty. The ruling house emerged from this order and retained its name.
Twelver Shiism: The largest branch of Shia Islam, which recognizes twelve divinely designated imams. The dynasty imposed it as Persia’s state religion and patronized its institutions.
Shah Abbas I: The Safavid shah who ruled from 1588 to 1629 and strengthened the state and its army. His reforms and campaigns brought the dynasty to its political and cultural high point.
