Schmalkaldic League

A military and political alliance of Protestant princes and cities in the Holy Roman Empire, formed in 1531 to defend their religious and political interests.

Diet of Augsburg (1530): An imperial assembly where Protestant estates presented the Augsburg Confession to Emperor Charles V. The emperor’s rejection of the confession helped prompt Protestant estates to organize collective defense.
