Seleucid Empire

A Hellenistic empire founded by Seleucus I Nicator in 312 BCE, ruling much of the Near East until its conquest by Rome in 64 BCE.

Seleucus I Nicator: A Macedonian general of Alexander the Great who founded the Seleucid dynasty and ruled from 305 to 281 BCE. His campaigns and settlement of Babylon created the empire’s foundations.
Satrapy: A province governed by a satrap, especially within ancient Persian and Hellenistic empires. Seleucid rulers adapted this provincial structure to administer distant territories.
Parthian Empire: An Iranian empire that ruled much of the former Seleucid eastern territory from the third century BCE to the third century CE. Parthian expansion was the principal cause of the Seleucids’ loss of Iran and Mesopotamia.
Antiochus I Soter: The second Seleucid king, who ruled from 281 to 261 BCE and defended the realm against external rivals. He consolidated the empire after Seleucus I’s assassination.
Battle of Raphia: A 217 BCE battle in which Ptolemy IV defeated Antiochus III during the Fourth Syrian War. It checked Seleucid efforts to take Egypt’s frontier region.
Wars of the Diadochi: Conflicts among Alexander the Great’s successors over the division of his empire. The Seleucid state emerged from these struggles for Alexander’s territories.
Seleucia on the Tigris: A major Seleucid city founded near Babylon that became an important political and commercial center. It served as a principal royal center in Mesopotamia.
Greco-Bactrian Kingdom: A Hellenistic kingdom in Central Asia that broke away from Seleucid rule in the mid-third century BCE. Its independence marked an early major fragmentation of Seleucid territory.
Antiochus III the Great: A Seleucid king from 223 to 187 BCE who restored much of the empire’s influence before defeat by Rome. His eastern campaigns temporarily reversed territorial decline.
Battle of Magnesia: A 190 BCE battle in which Roman and Pergamene forces defeated Antiochus III in Asia Minor. The defeat forced the settlement that dismantled Seleucid power west of the Taurus.
