Selim I

Selim I was Ottoman sultan from 1512 to 1520. His conquests of the Mamluk Sultanate brought Syria, Egypt, and the Hejaz under Ottoman rule and strengthened the empire’s position as the leading Sunni Muslim power.

Battle of Chaldiran: The 1514 battle in which Ottoman forces defeated the Safavid army in eastern Anatolia. The victory checked Safavid expansion and helped secure Selim’s eastern frontier.
Bayezid II: Ottoman sultan from 1481 to 1512 and Selim I’s father. His declining authority opened the succession struggle that Selim won.
Shah Ismail I: The founder of the Safavid dynasty and ruler of Iran from 1501 to 1524. His Safavid state was Selim’s principal eastern rival, defeated at Chaldiran.
Ottoman succession: The political process by which members of the Ottoman dynasty competed to inherit the sultanate. Selim’s accession followed a forceful contest with his father and brothers.

Al-Ashraf Qansuh al-Ghawri: The Mamluk sultan who ruled Egypt and Syria from 1501 until his death in 1516. His defeat and death at Marj Dabiq opened the way for Ottoman conquest of Syria.
Şehzade Ahmed: A son of Bayezid II and rival claimant to the Ottoman throne against Selim. His claim was the chief dynastic obstacle Selim faced after securing the sultanate.
Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge: A road bridge across the Bosporus in Istanbul, named after Selim I. Its name shows how Selim’s legacy remains visible in modern Turkey.
