Seta

A seta is a small, bristle-like structure projecting from an animal’s body. Depending on the animal, it can sense the environment, aid movement, or anchor the body.

Arthropod cuticle: The external skeleton of arthropods, made chiefly of chitin and proteins. Many animal setae are cuticular outgrowths formed from this external skeleton.
Mechanoreceptor: A sensory receptor that responds to mechanical forces such as pressure, stretch, or vibration. A mechanosensory seta converts bending or displacement into sensory activity.
Earthworm locomotion: The movement of earthworms through coordinated body contractions and anchoring against soil. Earthworm chaetae grip the substrate and resist backward slipping during movement.
Crab gills: Respiratory organs in crabs that exchange gases between blood and surrounding water. Setae on crab gills help maintain water flow and protect delicate respiratory surfaces.
Sensory hair: A hair-like sensory structure that detects mechanical or chemical stimuli. Some setae function as sensory hairs, registering touch, vibration, or nearby chemicals.
Sensory transduction: The conversion of a physical or chemical stimulus into signals in a sensory system. Deflection of a sensory seta can trigger electrical signals in attached receptor cells.
Gecko adhesion: The ability of geckos to cling to surfaces using microscopic structures on their toe pads. Gecko toe-pad setae branch into finer structures that make close contact with surfaces.
Daphnia antennae: The branched second antennae used by water fleas for swimming and sensing. Setae on these antennae contribute to sensing and movement through water.
Chaeta: A stiff bristle, especially one projecting from an annelid’s body wall. Chaeta is the common zoological name for many annelid setae.
Proprioception: The sensing of body position and movement through signals from the body itself. Setae on joints or limbs can report movement and contact during locomotion.
