Smolensk

Smolensk is a city in western Russia, near the border with Belarus. In August 1812, Napoleon’s army captured it after heavy fighting during the French invasion of Russia.

Battle of Smolensk (1812): A major battle fought near Smolensk in August 1812 between Napoleon’s invading forces and the Russian army. The fighting preceded the French capture of the city.
