Somali National Movement

The Somali National Movement (SNM) was a northern Somali opposition movement that fought Siad Barre’s government and helped bring about Somaliland’s declaration of independence in 1991.

Isaaq: The largest clan-family in Somaliland, whose members formed the SNM’s main social base. Isaaq grievances and networks supplied much of the movement’s early support.
Guerrilla warfare: Irregular warfare in which smaller forces use mobility, surprise, and local support against stronger opponents. The SNM used raids and mobile forces to challenge a better-equipped government army.
Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud: A Somali politician known as Silanyo who led the SNM and later served as Somaliland’s president. His leadership linked the movement’s insurgency with Somaliland’s later political order.
Somaliland: A self-declared independent state in northwestern Somalia, internationally recognized as part of Somalia. The SNM helped establish Somaliland after the central Somali government collapsed.
Somali Democratic Alliance: A Somali opposition organization formed in Ethiopia in 1981 by members of the Gadabuursi clan. Its formation shows how northern exile opposition developed alongside the SNM.
Somali Armed Forces: The national military of Somalia under Siad Barre’s government. The SNM fought the state’s army, whose conventional power shaped its insurgent strategy.
Abdirahman Ahmed Ali Tuur: A Somali politician and SNM leader who became Somaliland’s first president. He headed the transitional government formed after Somaliland declared independence.
Somaliland War of Independence: The conflict between the SNM and Siad Barre’s government in northern Somalia, especially from 1981 to 1991. This war was the movement’s central campaign and devastated northern cities.
Somali Salvation Democratic Front: A Somali rebel movement founded in 1978 to oppose Siad Barre’s government, mainly in northeastern Somalia. It was an earlier armed opposition movement and a precedent for the SNM.
Hargeisa: The largest city in Somaliland and its declared capital. The SNM’s 1988 offensive made Hargeisa a central battlefield and target of government bombardment.
