Somali nationalism

Somali nationalism is a political movement seeking unity and self-determination for Somali people across the Horn of Africa. It has shaped state-building, regional conflicts, and claims to Somali-inhabited territories.

Somali people: An ethnic group in the Horn of Africa linked by Somali language, cultural traditions, and historical ties. Shared language and cultural identity underpin nationalist claims across borders.
Somali language: A Cushitic language spoken primarily in Somalia and neighboring parts of the Horn of Africa. Standardizing the language later strengthened communication across regional and clan boundaries.
Ogaden War: The 1977–1978 war between Somalia and Ethiopia over the Ogaden region. Somalia's invasion sought to unite Somali-majority Ogaden with the Somali Republic.

British Somaliland: A British protectorate in the Horn of Africa that became independent in 1960 before uniting with Italian Somaliland. Its 1960 independence and union embodied an early attempt at Somali political unity.
Somali Republic: The state formed in 1960 by the union of British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland. Its creation made territorial unification an institutional project, not only a movement slogan.
