Sparta was an ancient Greek city-state in the Peloponnese, ruled by a citizen elite and sustained by the labor of a subjugated helot population.

Helots: Helots were a subjugated population in ancient Sparta, bound to the land and compelled to support Spartan citizens. Their agricultural labor sustained the citizen elite and made Spartan military specialization possible.
Syssitia: Syssitia were mandatory communal dining groups for Spartan male citizens. Shared meals reinforced civic bonds and helped define participation in the citizen class.
Dorian invasion: The Dorian invasion is an ancient tradition that explains the arrival of Dorian Greeks in the Peloponnese. Spartan origin stories linked the city’s population and customs to Dorian ancestry.
