Spermatozoon

A spermatozoon is a mature male reproductive cell that can fertilize an egg. In humans, it carries one set of chromosomes and is specialized for movement and egg recognition.

Spermatogenesis: The process by which sperm cells develop from germ cells in the testes. It produces spermatozoa through successive stages of cell division and maturation.
Flagellum: A long, whip-like cellular structure that can generate movement. The sperm tail is a specialized flagellum that drives forward motion.
Semen analysis: A laboratory examination of semen that measures sperm concentration, movement, and other characteristics. It evaluates sperm properties associated with male fertility.
Oocyte: An immature female germ cell that develops into an egg capable of fertilization. Unlike the small, motile spermatozoon, the oocyte is large and generally immobile.
Sperm motility: The ability of sperm cells to move, usually through coordinated tail beating. Motility propels sperm through the female reproductive tract toward an egg.
Acrosome: A membrane-bound structure at the front of a sperm head containing enzymes and other molecules. It stores molecules involved in interaction with the egg’s protective layers.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection: An assisted-reproduction technique in which one sperm is injected directly into an egg. It can bypass barriers to sperm movement or egg penetration.
Spermatid: A haploid cell produced during spermatogenesis that has not completed sperm maturation. A spermatid is a precursor, not yet the mature spermatozoon.
Capacitation: A set of changes that sperm undergo in the female reproductive tract, enabling fertilization. These changes prepare spermatozoa to respond to an egg’s surrounding layers.
Mitochondrion: A cell organelle that produces much of the cell’s usable chemical energy. Mitochondria in the sperm midpiece support the energy demands of movement.
