Sunda Strait

Sunda Strait is the sea passage between Java and Sumatra that connects the Java Sea with the Indian Ocean. It separates the two islands and contains the volcanic island of Krakatoa.

Java Sea: A shallow sea north of Java, bounded by several Indonesian islands. It is the sea connected to the Indian Ocean through Sunda Strait.
1883 Eruption of Krakatoa: A massive volcanic eruption that destroyed much of Krakatoa and generated deadly tsunamis. The eruption unfolded in the strait and transformed its volcanic islands.
Sunda Arc: A volcanic and tectonic arc formed where the Indo-Australian Plate subducts beneath the Sunda Plate. This arc frames the strait's volcanic islands and southern margin.
Port of Merak: A major ferry port on Java's western coast, serving crossings to Sumatra. Merak is one endpoint of the main Java–Sumatra ferry route.
Indian Ocean: The ocean between Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Southern Ocean. Sunda Strait opens southward into this ocean.
Sunda Strait tsunami: A tsunami caused by the 2018 collapse of part of Anak Krakatau into the sea. The wave struck coasts around the strait with little warning.
Sunda Plate: A tectonic plate underlying parts of Southeast Asia and the western Indonesian archipelago. Its boundary with the Indo-Australian Plate helps shape the region.
Port of Bakauheni: A ferry port in southern Sumatra that connects the island with Java. Bakauheni is the opposite endpoint of the strait's principal ferry crossing.
Sunda Shelf: A shallow continental shelf connecting mainland Southeast Asia with the islands of western Indonesia. Its submerged landscape underlies much of the surrounding shallow seas.
Sunda Strait Bridge: A proposed fixed crossing intended to connect Java and Sumatra across Sunda Strait. The proposal illustrates the engineering ambitions and constraints of crossing the channel.
