Tiberius

Tiberius was the second Roman emperor, ruling from 14 to 37 CE after Augustus. His reign consolidated the imperial system while marked by political repression and withdrawal from public life.

Roman imperial succession: The political process by which emperors arranged or contested the transfer of imperial power. Tiberius’s accession exposed the tension between dynastic inheritance and formal republican institutions.
Augustus: The first Roman emperor, who ruled from 27 BCE to 14 CE and established the Principate. Tiberius inherited the principate Augustus had built and succeeded him in 14 CE.

Julia the Elder: The daughter of Augustus whose marriages formed part of his plans to secure a dynastic succession. Her marriage to Tiberius linked him to Augustus’s direct family before their relationship deteriorated.
