Tram

A rail vehicle that usually runs on tracks in streets or urban rights of way, carrying passengers along fixed urban routes.

Tram track: Rail infrastructure designed for tram vehicles, including embedded street rails and dedicated alignments. Embedded rails let trams run through streets while remaining guided by a fixed track.
Horsecar: A passenger rail vehicle drawn by horses, commonly used on urban street railways. Horse-drawn cars were an early form of street tramway service.
Light rail: An urban rail transit mode using electric trains on reserved, shared, or street-running rights of way. Modern tram systems often overlap with light rail in vehicles and service design.
Streetcar: A passenger rail vehicle operating on urban street tracks, especially in North American usage. The term often names vehicles and systems closely corresponding to trams.
Overhead line: An overhead electrical conductor that supplies power to vehicles through a current collector. Many trams draw electricity from overhead wires through a pantograph or trolley pole.
Cable car: A railway vehicle propelled by gripping a continuously moving underground cable. Cable traction competed with electric traction on steep urban routes.
Urban rail transit: Rail-based passenger transport operating within cities and their surrounding urban areas. Trams are one mode within the wider urban rail network.
Rapid transit: High-capacity urban passenger transport operating on largely separated rights of way. Unlike typical trams, rapid transit avoids most street-level interaction with traffic.
Pantograph: A hinged apparatus that transfers electrical current between an overhead wire and a vehicle. It maintains contact with the overhead supply as a tram moves beneath it.
Frank J. Sprague: An American inventor and engineer who helped establish practical electric street railway systems. His Richmond system demonstrated electric streetcars operating reliably at urban scale.
