Umkhonto we Sizwe

Umkhonto we Sizwe was the armed wing of the African National Congress, founded in 1961 to resist apartheid through sabotage and later armed struggle.

African National Congress: A South African political movement founded in 1912 to oppose racial discrimination and advance Black majority rule. The ANC founded Umkhonto we Sizwe as its armed wing.
Sabotage: Deliberate damage or disruption of property, infrastructure, or operations, usually for political or military purposes. The organization’s initial campaign targeted infrastructure while seeking to avoid civilian casualties.
Walter Sisulu: A leading African National Congress organizer who helped build the movement and was imprisoned after the Rivonia Trial. Sisulu was among the ANC leaders involved in establishing the armed wing.
Negotiations to end apartheid: The political talks between South Africa’s government and liberation movements that dismantled apartheid and established majority rule. Umkhonto we Sizwe suspended armed operations during the transition negotiations.

Joe Slovo: A South African Communist Party leader and Umkhonto we Sizwe strategist who later became a government minister. Slovo helped develop the organization’s military and political strategy.
South African Defence Force: The military of apartheid-era South Africa, responsible for defending the white-minority government and conducting regional operations. It was the state military opposing the armed campaign and its allied movements.
Rivonia Trial: The 1963–1964 South African trial of Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid leaders accused of sabotage. The trial exposed Umkhonto we Sizwe’s early leadership and strategy.
Guerrilla warfare: Irregular warfare in which smaller forces use mobility, surprise, and local support against a stronger opponent. Umkhonto we Sizwe adopted guerrilla methods as its campaign developed.
