Wangchuck dynasty

Bhutan’s ruling royal dynasty, founded in 1907 when Ugyen Wangchuck became the country’s first king. Its monarchs have overseen Bhutan’s transition from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional democracy.

Ugyen Wangchuck: The first king of Bhutan, crowned in 1907 and founder of the Wangchuck dynasty. His coronation established the dynasty and unified Bhutan under hereditary monarchy.
