Welsh law

Welsh law was the body of legal customs and rules practiced in medieval Wales. Its best-known written forms were associated with the Welsh rulers Hywel Dda and varied across time and region.

Hywel Dda: A tenth-century Welsh king traditionally associated with compiling Welsh laws. His name became attached to the best-known medieval Welsh law codes.
Galnas: A payment for homicide in medieval Welsh law, assessed according to the victim’s social status. It converted a killing into a graded financial liability rather than a fixed penalty.
Laws of Hywel Dda: Medieval Welsh legal texts traditionally attributed to Hywel Dda, preserved in multiple manuscript versions. They are the principal surviving expression of the legal tradition.
English common law: The legal tradition developed in England through royal courts, precedent, and common legal procedures. Its institutions and procedures differed from Welsh customary legal frameworks.
Welsh Marches: The borderlands between Wales and England, shaped by Welsh and Anglo-Norman lordship. Different jurisdictions and rulers made legal practice vary across the Welsh borderlands.
Saraad: Compensation for insult or injury to honor under medieval Welsh law. It addressed reputational harm through payments distinct from homicide compensation.
Cyfraith Hywel: The Welsh name commonly used for the law tradition associated with Hywel Dda. The name reflects the tradition’s attribution to a ruler, not a single authoritative code.
Statute of Rhuddlan: A 1284 statute that established English royal administration and legal arrangements in much of conquered Wales. It curtailed the independent operation of Welsh law in areas under English rule.
Kindred: A group of people connected by descent, treated as a social and legal unit in many societies. Kinship shaped inheritance, compensation, and responsibility under Welsh legal custom.
Welsh law of succession: Rules governing inheritance and the transfer of property in medieval Welsh legal tradition. Succession rules reveal how Welsh law distributed land and recognized heirs.
