Yangtze River basin

The drainage region of central and eastern China whose rivers and streams flow into the Yangtze River, extending from the Tibetan Plateau to the East China Sea.

Yangtze River: The longest river in Asia, flowing from the Tibetan Plateau across China to the East China Sea. The basin is defined by the land whose waters ultimately drain into this river.
East Asian monsoon: A seasonal wind system that brings much of East Asia's summer rainfall and winter dryness. Its summer rains drive the basin's seasonal rises in river flow.
Three Gorges Reservoir: The reservoir formed behind the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River. It provides hydropower, flood storage, and navigation benefits within the basin.
Yangtze finless porpoise: A freshwater porpoise endemic to the Yangtze River system. Its decline reflects pressures from fishing, shipping, dams, and habitat loss in the basin.
Jinsha River: The upper course of the Yangtze River, flowing through the Tibetan Plateau and southwestern China. Its headwaters form a major western section of the basin.
Three Gorges Dam: A large hydroelectric dam on the Yangtze River in Hubei Province. Its reservoir stores and releases water within the basin's central trunk.
South–North Water Transfer Project: A Chinese infrastructure project that transfers water from the Yangtze basin toward northern China. Its central route diverts basin water to regions with greater shortages.
Baiji: A freshwater dolphin once found in the Yangtze River and declared functionally extinct in 2006. Its disappearance is a stark example of the basin's biodiversity crisis.
Min River: A major Yangtze tributary that joins the main river at Yibin in Sichuan. Its watershed drains a substantial part of the basin's western mountains.
Yangtze River Delta: A low-lying region around the Yangtze's mouth where the river divides into distributaries and meets the sea. It is the basin's downstream outlet and a zone of sediment deposition.
