Roman magistrate

A public official in ancient Rome who held authority through an elected or appointed office, often exercising executive, military, or judicial powers.

Imperium: A Roman power of command, especially authority over armies and the exercise of coercive force. Consuls and praetors wielded this authority within defined jurisdictions and terms.
Roman Republic: The period of Roman government traditionally dated from 509 to 27 BCE, before the emperors. Its political institutions supplied the framework for the best-known Roman magistracies.
